I have to admit it: at first, when I heard the rumors that Boy Meets World might be back for round 2, I was a little concerned. The thought of Girl Meets World made me cringe, especially in the Disney era we live in now (the post-Disney-makes-jokes-about-eating-disorders era where 12-year-olds idolize Justin Bieber – no offense, JB, but Cory Matthews was way cooler and didn’t get in trouble for drugs.) Alas, it only took about 10 seconds for that concern to morph into “OH MY GOD I AM SO EXCITED” (Caps Lock necessary, yes.) Mostly because Girl Meets World is going to include just enough of Boy Meets World to make it awesome, but not too much. And just to clarify, I do know that Girl Meets World is not intended to be an updated, girl-power-ized rehashing of Boy Meets World, but I am expecting it to be on par with its famous 90s predecessor, no matter where the storyline goes.
P.S. did we mention that there was a mini Boy Meets World cast reunion this weekend?
Here are 3 reasons why you should be excited for Girl Meets World (if you’re not already!)
1. Because it’s being made by Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs
If Girl Meets World was being spearheaded by anyone but Michael Jacobs, the creator of the original Boy Meets World series that we all know and love so much, I would say “no way” to watching it. Seriously. In that case, I probably would’ve turned it on ‘just to see’ if it was anywhere near the amazingness of Boy Meets World (and it’s likely I would’ve been majorly disappointed.) But, I trust Michael Jacobs because he did a damn good job the first time around. Given that Jacobs, in all his successful Boy Meets World glory, is getting things done on the Girl Meets World set, I think it’s pretty safe to say that this show is going to be awesome. Get excited, people.
2. Because our favorite Boy Meets World cast members might make cameos
Even though Girl Meets World is not intended to have the same storyline as the original, it has already been rumored that some old cast members may be making cameo appearances in the show. This makes sense since Cory and Topanga are the parents this time around, and considering, in perfect Boy Meets World world, everyone’s still friends. That means we’ll probably be seeing some of Eric (now Uncle Eric! Or maybe it’s Uncle “Plays With Squirrels” now…) and Cory’s badass bestie Shawn (uncle Shawn?) Oh, and one can only hope that Mr. Fe-he-he-heeny makes his way back into the show somehow too!
3. Because there’s a good chance there will be Boy Meets World flashbacks
Better than cameos of our favorite old characters to make us 90s kids feel super old, is the new rumor (fueled by Sabrina Carpenter, set to play Maya, AKA the Shawn-like, totally cool bestie to Riley – Cory and Topanga’s daughter) that there will be Boy Meets World flashbacks on the show. Seriously, flashbacks. I’m freaking out just thinking about it. What could be better than little reminders of our (and their characters’) collective childhoods mixed in with the awesomeness of a totally new show?
If you’re not excited about Girl Meets World, then, well, we just can’t be friends anymore.
Will you be tuning in to Girl Meets World when it finally airs?
